The Petite Fit Guide: How to Find Leggings and Tops That Don’t Need Altering

If you’re 5’4″ or under, you know the frustration. You find the perfect pair of leggings, but the “perfect” fit involves a roll of extra fabric bunched around your ankles. Or you buy a “standard” t-shirt that looks more like a dress.

It’s not just an aesthetic problem. Bunching fabric is uncomfortable and can ruin the line of your trainers, and a top that’s too long can get in the way during squats or yoga. For years, the solution has been to either put up with it or pay the “petite tax”—the extra cost of getting your new gym kit altered.

We believe in “affordable quality”. That means finding a great fit off the rack that makes you feel fantastic, without the hidden cost of alterations.

Finding activewear for a petite frame isn’t about finding a “petite” label. It’s about knowing what to look for. Here is our simple guide to finding your perfect fit.

1. Know Your Inseam (The 7/8 Legging Hack)
This is the most important tip for leggings. The “inseam” is the measurement from the crotch to the bottom of the hem. A standard full-length legging might have a 28″ inseam, which is what causes bunching on a petite leg.

The Solution: Look for 7/8 length leggings. On a taller person, these are designed to finish just above the ankle. On a petite person, a 7/8 length (often 24-25″) will almost always sit perfectly at the ankle, giving you a clean, full-length look with no bunching.

Our Leggings collection features a variety of styles , allowing you to find a length and fit that works for your frame.

2. Embrace the High-Waist
A high-waisted legging is a petite person’s best friend. It creates a seamless, elongated line from your waist to your ankle, which can make your legs appear longer. Functionally, it also provides a secure, “held-in” feel, so you’re not worrying about your leggings rolling down during a workout. All of our leggings feature comfortable, high-waisted designs for this very reason.

3. Use “Cropped” to Your Advantage
Just as a 7/8 legging provides the perfect length for your legs, a “cropped” top can provide the perfect length for your torso. A standard-length vest or tee can often be too long on a petite frame, covering your waistband and cutting you in half visually.

A crop top, however, is designed to finish higher. On a petite body, this often means it will sit perfectly at your natural waist or just at the top of your high-waisted leggings. This gives you a proportionate, stylish look that’s also highly functional. Our Tops collection includes “fashion-forward designs” and “stylish crop tops” that are perfect for this.

4. Choose Your T-Shirt Fit Wisely
An oversized t-shirt can be a great look, but on a petite frame, it can sometimes overwhelm you. For an everyday, put-together look, a classic-fit tee is a wardrobe staple. It provides a timeless silhouette that won’t drown your frame. Look for our classic cotton t-shirts collection, which are designed for a “classic fit” and “all-day comfort” —ideal for pairing with leggings without adding unnecessary bulk.

Finding activewear that fits and makes you feel confident shouldn’t be a challenge. With a few smart shopping tips, you can build a versatile, high-quality gym wardrobe that feels like it was made for you.
